Veena and the Red Roti
Written by Namita Moolani Mehra | Illustrated by Beena Mistry
hardcover
Veena loves her home in Sindh. But on a terrible night in 1947 when the Partition of India divides the country, her family must suddenly cross the border, leaving everything behind.
At the refugee camp, Veena misses home, especially the warmth and familiarity of her kitchen. In the dusty camp, even the roti is different: hard and red. But Veena puts her roti making skills to good use and helps out in the camp kitchen to cook up a taste of home and bring hope and comfort to those around her.
Inspired by the author’s grandparents’ experiences, this picture book provides a tender, optimistic look at one of the subcontinent’s darkest chapters. The tale has a strong, specific emotional core, enhanced by gentle earth-toned images that leaven the often difficult subject matter.
A heartwarming picture book that beautifully captures the spirit of resilience
and hope amidst the backdrop of Partition. It also serves as a reminder that
even in the face of adversity, the bonds of family, the taste of home, and the
dreams we hold dear, can help us navigate through the darkest of times.
